About

Artist Statement

I am fascinated with nature and the curving organic shapes that it contains in abundance—especially in flowers. I enjoy making intimate portraits of nature on a grand scale using color, shape, and light to create drama. With a formal training in graphic design, I am not only interested in the main subject, but also the negative space around the subject and how they combine to make a dynamic painting.  I enjoy translating an image in my own “language”, finding shapes in form and shadow and then exaggerating them. I aim to create a powerful image in which the viewer has the sense of the canvas glowing from within.

About the Artist

Janci Mannington has been oil painting for nearly thirty years. She has enjoyed a successful portrait-painting career and is recognized for her ability to capture likeness and spirit in her portraits of people and animals. Inspired by the beauty of the Northwest garden, her new paintings are filled with large flowers flooded with exciting color and dramatic lighting. She uses her traditional portrait painting tools of fine grade canvas, professional oil paints, and red sable brushes to create amazingly smooth, almost burnished-looking “nature portraits.”

Mannington graduated from Penn State University with a BA in graphic design.

"I have over sixteen years experience designing, illustrating and photographing various subjects for my graphic design clients. Over the years, graphic design

became a profession that required one to spend a great deal of time behind the computer and I longed to use my hands and more traditional painting tools again.”

Mannington was juried into the Women Painters of Washington in 2009. This is a prestigious organization of women artists from around the state that was founded in 1930. She is currently showing her work at the Women Painters of Washington Gallery in the Columbia Tower in downtown Seattle, where she was voted “favorite artist.”
